Past Simple (beginners)

Use: 

1. For an action that happened at a stated past time.
2. For past habits (+used to/would)
3. For actions that happened one after the other.
4. For an action that happened at an unstated past time and is not connected with the present.

Structure:

Statement "+"

  1. Noun/pronoun

  2. Verb (+ed/II column of the irregular verbs)

I practiced English yesterday.

He had his lesson on Monday.

Question "?"

  1. Did
  2. Noun/pronoun
  3. Verb (no 'ed', I column)

Did you practice English yesterday?

Did he have his lesson on Monday?

Negation "-"

  1. Noun/pronoun
  2. did
  3. not
  4. Verb (no ed, I column)

You didn't practice English yesterday.

You didn't have your lesson on Monday.

Spelling:

  1. For verbs ending in "e" we add the "d"-ending: baked, craved, died... etc.
  2.  The rule of the three conditions:
    • If the stress falls on the last syllable
    • And there is one vowel in the syllable
    • And the syllable ends in one consonant 

     – the last consonant doubles and we add the "ed"- ending: plan – planned, stop – stopped.

  3.  In the British variant of English the verbs ending in “l” double the “l” and add the “ed” –

    ending no matter where the stress falls: travel – travelled, cancel – cancelled. For the

    American variant apply the “Rule of the Three Conditions”.

  4. If a verb ends in a “y” with a preceding consonant, change “y” into “i” and add “ed”: cry – he cried, try – she tried, accompany – he accompanied.
  5. If a verb ends in “y”  with a preceding vowel, don’t change the “y”, just add  the “ed”-ending: play- he played, enjoy – she enjoyed.

 Exercise 1

Put the following verbs in the Past Simple:

Translate, please:

1. Вы хорошо спали? - Да, я спал, как младенец.

2. Вчера я прочитала книгу и поубирала.

3. Я пришла домой, разделась, приняла душ и легла спать.

4. Мы смотрели этот фильм в прошлом году.

5. Вы куда-то ходили на выходных? - Да, мы ходили погулять, потанцевали в клубе и спели в караоке. После этого мы пошли домой. Дома мы не сняли одежду и не одели пижаму, а сразу заснули.

6. Ты вчера покормила кота? - Нет, я его погладила.

7. Джейн выгуляла собаку, а Стив ее покормил.

Exercise 4

Translate, using Present Simple, Present Progressive and Past Simple:

1. Как часто вы моете пол. Обычно я это делаю раз в неделю, но на прошлой неделе я была на столько занята, что не помыла его.

2. Они сейчас ужинают. Потом мы смотрим вместе фильм у них дома (at their place).

3. Я не пою в душе, это была моя сестра.

4. Кто вышил эту картину? Я. Вы все еще вышиваете. Больше нет.

5. Обычно мама выгуливает собаку, но вчера вечером ее выгуливала я и всю эту неделю тоже буду выгуливать.

6. Она все время гладит кошку! Бедное животное! А она ее кормит?

7. В котором часу вы ложитесь спать? По-разному (it depends). Вчера я заснула в 11.

8. Что он делает? Готовит ужин.

9. Бабушка вяжет носки, а я комментирую на фейсбуке фотографию, которую моя подруга выложила.
